Is the political climate in the U.S. causing you anxiety? Are you worried about tariffs, trade wars, or annexation? Do you worry about how far your dollar will go for groceries or other necessities?
No matter what your political affiliation, the instability south of the border is causing worry and anxiety for many. As Canadians, we cannot directly influence American politics. What we can do is focus on keeping ourselves grounded and in the present moment. Below are some strategies to help manage the anxiety and worry:

Limit your news intake to 30 minutes a day and not before bed. Look at reputable or vetted sources. By doing so, you can stay informed without feeling overwhelmed. Please do not rely on social media for your news, as it is no longer fact-checked.
Discuss your concerns with family and friends. Sharing your worries can be helpful. The challenge is when the American situation is all that you talk about. Put a time limit on discussions.
Talk to me! If you don’t feel supported or heard, book an appointment. I will listen to your concerns and provide the guidance you need to feel better. My goal is to make your session a positive and supportive experience.
Use extended health care benefits! You’ve worked hard for them – use them for personal counselling and psychotherapy, PTSD and Trauma.
Be the change you want to see in your community. Your support will help alleviate the feeling of helplessness that often drives worry.
- Get involved with grassroots organizations that promote or believe in your values and priorities.
- Support organizations that are trying to mitigate the harm of U.S. presidential policies.
- Peacefully protest. If a rally or protest aligns with your values and beliefs, get out there and be seen. Make your voice heard.

Support Local. Buy Canadian. It’s not as easy as it sounds, and for many of us, our budget dictates our purchases, but when you can, buy Canadian, especially locally produced products and services. By doing so, you can feel more connected and supportive of your community.
Look for and download the easy-to-use Shop Canadian app. Open the app, scan the barcode, learn HOW Canadian the product is you’re thinking of buying.
Remember to keep breathing through all of this. Take some time to notice all that we have in Canada. It is easy to get caught up in the rhetoric, but by taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of our country, you can feel calmer and thankful that we are the true north strong and free.
