Fort McMurray – PTSD and Natural Disasters

Forest Fire. Big Fire In The Foreground In The Night Forest. DisThe disaster at Fort McMurray has been in the news this past month, as the forest fires grew in intensity and people were evacuated from their homes.  Now there is talk of returning to Fort Mac to survey the damage and begin to rebuild.  Also highlighted in the news has been a concern for the psychological health of the residents, both adults and children and the first responders.  Money has been raised to rebuild the community, but care and attention needs to also be paid to the mental health of all involved.

Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is a mental health concern that may be a challenge for some.  PTSD symptoms include: re-experiencing the trauma, intrusive memories or flashbacks.  Individuals may avoid feelings and thoughts, and places and people that remind them of the trauma.  This may be very challenging, when the entire community has been affected and there are memories on every corner.  Hyper-vigilance, being constantly on alert, easily irritated and easily startled are also signs.  All of these signs and symptoms are considered normal following an event, but if they continue, then professional help should be sought.

If you live in Alberta and feel you need emotional support, please call Alberta’s 24 hour distress line at 1-877-303-2642.  For more mental health resources in the Fort McMurray area click here.  Community groups, friends, family, places of worship can be sources of support during this difficult time.  Reach out for support within the community and to friends and family across the country.

While most of us can never fully appreciate and understand the experiences of the residents in Fort Mac, our thoughts and prayers are with them as they recover from this life changing experience.

It’s where we go, and what we do when we get there, that tells us who we are.
